Très beau séjour au calme, une belle piscine, notre fils et le chien ont bien profité de grands espaces autour de la propriété. Tim est un hôte très attentif et disponible.
We spent a week at Le Chataignier, the smallest and more rustic of the four gites on site. We enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of the place, the garden and the pool. Tim was a great host. He provided us with some fresh bread, butter, jam and a bottle of rather lovely wine on our arrival. Tea, sugar and coffee were provided and we also found a few bits, like cling film and seasonings, left over by previous guests. The house has wi-fi and satellite TV, should you ever be missing UK programmes (handy for us to watch the Tour de France highlights!). Towels for the bathroom and for the pool are provided. The kitchen is big and airy and has all of the basic equipment and utensils you'd need on holiday, including a dishwasher (which we did not use) and a washing machine (hope the handle is repairable, sorry!). There is a large dining table in the kitchen and also table and chairs outside on the patio, next to the bbq and the sun loungers. The property comfortably sleeps 4 although it can accommodate six people. But with only one bathroom, six people sharing might be pushing it. Tim offered some suggestions of places to visit and was always, discretely, on hand should a problem or query would arise. Rowan and Looping, the resident dogs, were good playmates for our dog. The property is in the middle of nowhere, so do not expect a quick walk to a boulangerie for breakfast pastries or to quickly pop out for dinner. There are only fields, walnut groves and endless sunflowers fields all around. There are a few VTT (mountain bikes) circuits departing from nearby. The pool and the garden are shared with the other properties and we enjoyed meeting the other guests but there is enough seclusion should you wish to keep to yourself. We had a lovely time but as ever it all went too quickly!
Great place to totally chill. Old and rustic with a lot of character. We enjoyed it even the dogs had a ball in the massive back and front gardens. They never had a collar on the whole time we were there. You will need a car or a bike as its a bit out the way but plenty of nice resturants in the area. Local wine is good quality. There is fruit and nuts growing all over the area and location. Scenery in the in morning walking the dogs was amazing. Completely no noise so first time in years we slept perfect. Did not even look at the phone for the week. Reception maybe a bit patchy because of location but we went for a detox and loved it. We will go back again and Tim is always on hand to give advice and help. I now know how to make Slo Gin from the local fruit growing there.
What a find. Quirky character Gites in a beautiful area of the French countryside. If you want quiet accommodation with wonderful pool and outdoor area this is for you. Lovely villages and attractions within an hours drive. Riberac market well worth a visit. Tim is a fab host and is usually on site to ensure your stay is trouble free. Over and above service. Already booked to go back.
We were lucky enough to spend the whole of July at La Vieille Forge and we had the most amazing time. Our host Tim couldn't have been more accommodating, always on hand with an endless supply of towels, bed linen and local sightseeing advice. We loved spending time with Tim, his sister Christine and the two lovely dogs that further add to the charm of this beautiful place! The Gite oozes traditional rustic charm with contemporary bathroom suites and a charming yet functional kitchen with spacious dining area. Tim had thought of everything, we have a two and a one year old and he provided us with a travel cot, high chair, plastic crockery, inflatables for the pool & even gave us an additional mattress and bed linen for our teenage nephew who wanted to make a 'den' to sleep in! He kindly booked the vets appointment for our dog & even bought him a toy to play with. Having him onsite inhanced our stay no end! Our young children thoroughly enjoyed having access to such a brilliant swimming pool and our Labrador made the most of the well maintained grounds, surrounding sunflower fields and woodland walks. The setting is so peaceful and the atmosphere is super relaxed, my family and I couldn't have hoped for a better place to spend an unusually long holiday!
One of four gites set in a small hamlet. We were welcomed by the owner - Tim - and given a tour of our gite and the pool,The kitchen was well equipped for basic holiday cooking and bbq's and a lovely welcome pack of wine, cheese, bread, tapenade and milk, plus coissants and pain au chocalat in the freezer were waiting for us.
This gite has low ceilings upstairs and even at Five foot Three, I had to keep well bent over going in and out of the bedroom. Not a problem, but something to bear in mind if you are really tall.
The shower was excellent and a washing machine useful to keep on top of the washing! Outside is a patio area with bbq, loungers (very comfy) and table and chairs, plus a lovely grassy are -ideal for families to play on. The pool and surrounding area were well maintained and included fridge to keep your drinks cold! Bonus. Tim is happy to arrange a visit to the local chateau for cognac and pineau (the local aperitif) tasting and a tour of their distillery. There is an artisan bar about 30mins walk, along paths and very quiet roads. limited opening hours but worth a visit. The nearest supermarket is 10-15mins away. If you want to eat out this is best done at lunchtime when you are out exploring as there were not any restaurnats in the local vicinity. There is also english TV for those who like to keep up with their favourite programmes. If you want a quiet relaxing holiday with excellent markets, old hillside villages and walking this is the place for you!
This beautiful gite is one of 4 in a hamlet, and is situated up a small lane so is quiet and secluded, yet the local town is only a 10 minute drive away. Each of the gites has their own patio with BBQ, outdoor table, chairs and sun loungers, and a shared lawn that is great for ball games, with swings and climbing frame. There is a lovely saltwater pool with toddler splash pool attached, and the pool area is well stocked: sun-loungers, parasols, shaded area, table, BBQ, fridge and speakers for you to plug your MP3 player in and have music whilst you relax. The pool is gated, and Tim (the lovely British owner) locks it each evening for safety. The gite itself can sleep up to 7 people - but that would be quite cosy! Three of us stayed here, and it was about the right size, but could easily accommodate a 4th person. There is one double bedroom, a smaller room with bunk beds, and the 3rd bedroom has 3 single beds. There is a lovely bathroom with power shower over bath, and a hairdryer very thoughtfully provided. All bed linen, bath towels and pool towels are provided. The sitting room has a wood burner (not needed in August!) and TV with English satellite TV available. The kitchen/ diner is huge - and has a washing machine, dishwasher, cooker and is well fitted out with every implement/ crockery/ glassware that you would need. There is plenty of shaded parking available. Tim has 2 collies (Rowan and Looping) who like to pop in and out of your house. A British family staying in one of the adjacent gites brought their dog with them from the UK. Mobile phone signal is good in and around the house, and there is limited wi-fi available, but as there are data limits in France that are expensive if exceeded, I would plan to have a complete break from social media etc. whilst at the gite. There is lots to do locally - vineyards and Chateaus where you can try the local "Pineau des Charentes" a lovely fortified wine that slips down very easily at the end of the day. There are plenty of places to visit for the day - anything from the local river beach to Roman fortresses, local markets to a crocodile zoo, caves with ancient paintings and stunning stalagmites. We also took a 2 day trip to Futuroscope - a 3D/4D theme park based just outside Poitiers. We will definitely visit there again! This holiday is ideal if you want to relax, or be out every day and just sleep there. You are ideally placed to get to the sea (Royan is about 1.5 hr drive) or inland to see what the Dordogne has to offer. We loved it at Le Chataignier so much, that we have rebooked, and are looking forward to another glorious 2 weeks there in the summer.
We had a lovely 7 day holiday in La Vieille Forge. Tim was a very welcoming host (wine, milk, cheese and croissants were very much appreciated). His two dogs (Rowan and Looping) provided great entertainment for our 3 children and are very much missed already.
The Gite is well equipped with outdoor patio and sun-loungers for relaxing and barbecue. The pool is great and provided welcome relief from the hot sun. Local area is quaint. Enjoyed canoe trip from along the river Drone to Aubeterre which is a very pretty town. We would like to return in the future, hopefully for longer. Our family had a thoroughly relaxing time in our gite. We loved spending time around the pool, which had a very convenient fridge to keep our drinks cool! The gite was clean, spacious & had everything we needed. We loved relaxing on our sun loungers next to our patio & being able to braai (BBQ) every evening. Tim was helpful with directions & activities available in the area & all round a fantastic host!
We spent a morning in the beautiful town of Aubeterre, a short drive from Pillac as well as a morning in Brantôme, where we hired canoes and paddled around this beautiful town. Our children loved playing with his two dogs, Rowan & Looping, a wonderful place for a family to relax, unwind & have fun!
We stayed at Le Grange for 2 weeks in August. Blisteringly hot in an amazingly beautiful part of France. The house is old, beamed and quirky and cool in the heat.Mod cons are all there with amazingly powerful showers and good sized bathrooms.
Tim the owner is amazingly generous with a lovely welcome pack and nearby if you need anything. The pool area is lovely and with a choice of 3 depths, caters for all family ages.Would recommend this to anyone who loves being away from it all, countryside and beautiful surrounding walks in sunflower fields around the hamlet
We as a family stayed here with our friends in August this year and had a truly brilliant time. When you book a holiday, especially when children are involved, you so need it to be everything you want it to be. Admittedly, if you are looking for a busy and dynamic place to stay, then this is not for you, but if you are looking for a quiet time in beautiful rural France, then this is so the right place. We joined our friends and found ourselves immediately relaxing and catching up with one another over a glass of wine or two and enjoying a nice meal together.
We were delighted with our gite which was both spacious and inviting and had two amazing power showers which was perfect considering how hot it was. There was everything you needed, including a perfectly equipped kitchen and a delightful welcome pack. There were plenty of sunbeds outside each gite, a large table to enjoy meals together and across the play area, a beautifully kept swimming pool with 2 little pools for young children. In the pool area, Tim the owner, had also installed a fridge and and BBQ and electrics to play music.
The surrounding area was so beautiful with fields of sunflowers and roads with very little traffic and the local town 10 mins away. We so enjoyed getting away from the business of everyday life and were able to completely wind down. Our friends were able to take their dog which can often be a problem when you go away, but even he was totally relaxed, enjoying moments of running around with the owners dogs. Tim the owner, is one of the nicest people you can meet and did everything he could to make us welcome, swinging by each day and checking that we were OK. I have already gone back to work to tell my colleagues about this place and we are already making plans for next year. Thank you Tim
Tim is such an exceptional host! Our little family had the most fabulous 10 days in our gite. The rustic charm and relaxed environment with every amenity we could possibly need gave us the ability to relax and settle into the French country side in a ridiculously short amount of time. Poolside relaxation in an amazing space lent itself to us all feeling absolutely at home. Our children wanted to take Rowan(Tim's dog) home with us!
We had such an amazing time in a relaxed comfortable setting, which we As a family could absolutely recommend to anyone. Our gite was so well equipped we were super comfortable and totally at home. We can't wait to stay again, in fact just days after getting home we are dreaming of being back!
The Hawker family's holiday for the summer of 2015 started with a stay at Chez Daviaud as a stop off point on the way to Spain. Travelling from Roscoff to Tarragona was too much to do in one go and we therefore identified a suitable venue about half way through out Journey.
Tim was a great host and we immediately felt relaxed and at home with essentials already in the fridge on arrival. Tim provided a tour of our home and the other essential areas of the property, nothing was too much trouble.
The Gite was very welcoming and spacious with everything that you would need for a stay. In fact you could easily live in the accommodation with the facilities on offer. The Gete was very clean and had many period features, parts of the property were many hundreds of years old but it had a modern twist. Outside, we had our own private rest area and 30 yards away there was a very good sized heated swimming pool with inflatable toys the children played with. The Gite is situated in the middle of the beautiful French countryside and Tim provided us with a number of places to visit which were off the beaten track and very quaint Essential. We had arranged tours of local vineyard and visited two local villages which were amazing, even though, unusually, the weather was not brilliant.
The most disappointing aspect about our visit was the fact it was only a stop-over for a couple of nights and not part of a main holiday as we would have been happy to stay put rather than continue our travels to Spain. We would thoroughly recommend Chez Daviaud as a place to enjoy France but the longer the stay the better.
Tim was a superb host, very friendly right from the initial communication through to our arrival at La Vieille Forge. We were staying in one of 4 separate dwellings, there were 6 of us in total. Myself my wife and two children along with my parents.
Tim has worked very hard to ensure all the important practical considerations are in place. A great kitchen space for us all, brilliant bathrooms and a fantastic outdoor BBQ area. The pool was perfect considering how hot the weather was while we were staying. All in all a superb host, great accommodation, it is what it says on the tin! - Thanks Tim for a great stay and good luck with the remainder of the season Cheers Chris
My husband, teenage daughter and I stayed at Chez Daviaud in June 2015. The place is set in beautiful Charente farmland quite close to the Dordogne. Tim, the owner, greeted us on our arrival with a welcome package of bread, milk, cheese, pâté, bottle of wine, washing up liquid, cloths and tea towels which was very gratefully received after a long drive. The property we stayed in, La Vieille Forge, was one of four gîtes recently renovated by Tim and local builders. Through the latch door there were still signs of the old farmhouse, bread oven, old sink, tiled floors and the open light and airy kitchen and dining area with old beams had all modern appliances such as dishwasher, hob, cooker and plenty of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils you would need for a self catering holiday. There is a modern downstairs shower and laundry room, large living room with log burner and stairs that lead to three bedrooms but beware there are low ceilings and so watch your heads!
The outside area at the back of the property is accessed through the kitchen where there is a small, private patio area for eating, barbecuing and lounging. This looks out into a large grass area and we could access the large swimming pool and sun lounge area just a few metres away. There was a covered shelter if required. The pool was perfect temperature on hot days.
We visited the local hostelry about a mile away and had an excellent tour of the distillery where the delicious pineau is produced - a definite must try. The nearest village is Saint-Séverin where we bought bread, pastries and used the Internet cafe. Only slightly further is the beautiful village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne with a good choice of bars and restaurants as well as fun canoeing on the river. The largest supermarket is in Riberac about 12 miles away.
Chez Daviaud was a very relaxing holiday and Tim and Rowan made us feel really welcome. It's a perfect spot for families.
